TASK 1: the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK

The bar chart illustrates the quantity of minutes of telephone calls in the United Kingdom by three categories including local landline, interior and overseas landline and mobiles between 1995 and 2002

It is clearly seen that the number of minute calls by local landline had a fluctuation and it still was used the most widely. Meanwhile, the figure for interior and overseas landline and mobiles significantly increased and the number of time of calling by mobiles soared in the final 3 years of the period shown.

Starting a little more than 70 billion minutes, the local landline was the main option for calling in the UK while that figure for National and international just stood at about 38 billion minutes. By contrast, it was only under 5 billion minutes of calling by mobiles in 1995. After 4 years, all categories significantly rose. The local landline reached the top at 90 billion minutes and it was nearly twice times more than the number for national and international landline, which stood at 50 billion minutes. Moreover, the number of minutes of calling by mobiles gradually went up to approximately 12 billion minutes.

From 1999 to 2002, there was a remarkable decline by 18 billion minutes in the quantity of time of calling by local fixed line, comparing to itself in the first year, the figures were the same but it still the most popular option for calling whereas the number for interior and overseas landline had a small rise to around 60 billion minutes. The time of calls using mobiles rocketed and accounted for about 45 billion minutes
