The pie charts below show units of electricity production by fuel source Australia and France in 1980 and 2000.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Units of electricity by fuel source in Australia

Units of electricity by fuel source in France

The given pie charts compare the sources of electricity in Australia and France in the years 1980 and 2000. It is evident that in these countries the production of electricity almost doubled by 2000 from 1980, rising from 100 units to 170 in Australia, and from 90 units to 180 units in France.

With regards to Australia, half of its electricity was produced by coal in 1980, with the remainder coming from natural gas and hydro power (each producing 20 units) and the rest 10 units generated by oil. By 2000, the share of coal had reached 130 units (about 75% of the total share). While the use of hydro power had also increased (by 16%) in the same year, the other two sources had no longer a significant role in the production of Australia's electricity in 2000 (4% all told).

By contrast, In France, coal had only produced about 25 unit of the electricity, which was matched by natural gas. Unlike Australia, which did not have any means of electricity production by nuclear power, France had 15 units of its electricity produced by nuclear power in 1981, with the rest 5 units coming from hydro power. By 2000, out of 180 units of electricity produced in this country, 126 units of it had been produced by nuclear power. Although the number of electricity units produced by coal remained the same by 2000, its proportion had almost halved by then. And, to a lesser extent, the same was true about oil. The other two sources of electricity produced only 4 units, which could be ignored in comparison to other sources.

Overall, Australia had reduced its reliance on fossil fuels by 2000 and was heavily dependent on nuclear power to produce its electricity. In contrast, Australia was to great extent dependent on coal in its electricity production by 2000.

Thank you.
