Task 1: The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, there are seven stages in making sugar, starting with planting sugar canes and ending with drying and cooling the sugar.

At the first stage of the diagram, the sugar canes are planted until they are 12 to 18 months old. And then they are harvested either by hand or by a harvesting machine, at which point they are crushed by a squeezer. The sugar canes are put on top of the machine, and the juice comes out from the bottom. The juice is collected afterwards and the byproducts are discarded. Subsequently, the juice has to be purified through a limestone filter to remove unwanted materials.

After that, the purified juice has to be evaporated in a boiler with suitable heat to obtain the mixture of sugar crystals and syrup. The mixture then undergoes a centrifuge stage, when the two items are separated. Finally, the resulting sugar needs drying and cooling before being sold in commercial market.
