The chart below gives information about the most common sports played in New Zealand in 2002. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar chart shows the proportion of boy and girls in New Zealand in the year 2002 who played sports which divided to 9 distinct categories including cricket, Athletics, Martial arts, basketball, tennis, netball, soccer, swimming and ‘other’.
Overall, there was a significant difference between the percentage of boys and girls who took part in sports in most of these sports. While boys were not interested in playing Netball, Cricket was less popular with girls.
Among girls, 25% played netball which was the most popular sport compared to only 1% of boys enjoyed. The percentage of girls participated in swimming was approximately 22%, 10% higher than that of boys. The similar pattern can be seen in athletics, with a proportion of 4% for girls and 3% for boys.
Among boys, the sports with the higher participation value were soccer, other, cricket with 24%,16%, 10% respectively. 8% of boys took part in tennis and 6% played basketball. The percentage of boys who participated in martial arts was 9% in comparison with 3% of girl’s value.
