Tarry bed

Hello,

Could you, please, explain to me an expression (tarry bed) that I didn't find in any dictionary:

"...all his melted features shivered like an oyster or a quaking bog or tarry bed. Who qould have expected his feeling to be quite so strong?"

The text is from the book "Parrot and Olivier in America" by Peter Carey.

Thank you very much for your help.
