Tapped their watches

HI proficient speakers,

I like reading english books and stories. Today I found something ,where I could guess the meaning. But wasn't sure.Although I looked it up in a dictionarry it made no sense. So please explain the emphasized part of the sentence:) :

The rest of the passengers sighed, tapped their watches, ostentatiously took out again the company reports that they'd stowed in their briefcases.

Thank you Emotion: smile
