Vocabulary

tangerine VS mandarin orange

Hi,

(1) I've checked some dictionaries but ...still not sure if it is the same fruit actually.
(2) It looks like the fruit you English speakers call "tangerine" is called "mandarin" (or similar spelling) in all other major European languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Swedesh, Turkish, etc., except the Portuguese language though).

How can it be explained?

I understand that they are different varieties of the same species. This is what Wikipedia thinks: The tangerine (Citrus tangerina) is an orange-colored citrus fruit which is closely related to the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata). Taxonomically, it may be named as a subspecies or variety of Citrus reticulata; further work seems to be required to ascertain its correct scientific name.
