Talking above them ?

Hi~ In the following sentences, what do you think of the meaing of the expression, "talking above them"?

Talking, ignoring them? Or misspelling "talking about them"? Or "talking louder than them"?

I will never forget when we were discussing the importance of being
respectful, D raised his hand to question me about a concern that
he had. “Dr. you are telling us to listen and not talk while our
teachers are talking, and that it important to listen and value the opinions
of others before speaking; you are asking us to be respectful of others
as they speak, not talking above them?” “Correct,” I responded. He
then added, “Well, you have several teachers behind me that do not get
that message and have been talking the entire time during your presentation.”
