Talking about the past

Hello,

Assume please that some person is saying:

We used to have an affectionate black and white cat. She would make some noises when we came home after school.

The speaker is telling the hearer about a past event, like a story. Now a question about these kinds of talks about the past is using the past tenses. The speaker has used "came" (the underlined word), but I think I would use "would come" there.

Are both right in this sense of talk? Have they any difference please?

'... when we came home' is fine. I'd say 'She would purr when we came home from school'.
