Talking about sport achievements

I would like to ask about expressions we use to talk about achievements in sport. I’m interested in the expression normal people use talking in a cafe. I’ve written a conversation, could you please correct my mistakes and suggest more appropriate expressions.

- When I was six I took up chess, I did it for five years and then I gave it up.
- Do you have any trophies? (Shall I use awards instead of trophies?)
- Yes, I won several tournaments, and I had the first rank (category?!) according to the rating system.
- So you have a lot of cups at home?
- Not cups, I’ve got many letters of recognition (merit certificates?!). My mom keeps them somewhere.

Many sportsmen can hold the first degree at the same time, and in some sports there are junior degree and senio

No, not to me. It sounds as clear as 'first class degree', which does not sound native.
ZorinaWhat is the best way to put it?
