talk into

Would you please tell me that in what situations we usually use "talk into", in the meaning of persuading? I mean for instance, do we use it when we are persuading our friend who do not smoke to smoke with us? Or we use it to describe what happened or is happening in meetings and sessions, for instance in a business or a political issue?
Does it have synonyms for each of those situations? Casual, official, and for instance with our father.

Persuading your friend would be a good example of talking someone into something. Politically or in a business atmosphere it would be less appropriate/common, unless you are using a friendly/jovial tone, but I wouldn't really recommend it. In my experience, to talk someone into something somewhat implies that they are doing it against their better judgement; that you have convinced them to do it and they have not decided on their own.

Oh - just expanding upon my earlier comment that usually talking someone into something is something they wouldn't have done themselves or "shouldn't" actually go along with. That is an implication (to me), not a definitive truth.
