Talk behind sb's back

What form of "back" should I use if somebody is in plural form?

Shoud I write:
"He often talks about people behind their backs"

or

"He often talkes about people behind their back" ?

It is an idiom, so you can use the singular, but the plural is OK too.

He talks about his friends behind their back.
