Taking/heading off

Hi, everyone. Is this sentence correct? What is the difference between taking/heading?

She walked past a group of people smoking before taking/heading off downstairs.

Top answer

heading off implies motion in a given direction away from something. taking off implies leaving and suggests that this is done fairly rapidly. Without more context I'd say that you want heading off in your sentence.
