Taking centre stage, reference points

With the phone tapping issue taking centre stage, the BJP on Sunday said it would demand suspension of Question Hour in both houses of Parliament on Monday to discuss it and ask for a JPC to investigate the matter.
"It seems the UPA government is heading for a landmark scandal. The silence of the government on the phone tapping issue makes UPA-II a complete suspect," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.
He said the BJP would press for suspension of question hour on Monday and ask the government to set up a JPC on the phone tapping issue.
"BJP demands setting up of a common JPC both for the IPL scam and phone tapping controversy with different reference points. The same committee can look into both issues," Mr. Rudy said.
The Rajya Sabha MP claimed that the government was in the backfoot over the issue.
"It is a shameful event which has shocked the nation and the silence of the Government is deafening," he said.
Reacting to the BJP's demand, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, "making a demand for JPC outside Parliament even before the issue is discussed on the floor of the House and before hearing the response of the government is surprising."
