Taking aspirin, i.e., a blood thinner, and... which made it impossible for blood clotting to occur.

My dad's situation was worsened by the fact that he had been taking aspirin, i.e., a blood thinner, and which made it impossible for blood clotting to occur.

1. Is it OK to write "i.e' instead of 'that is' for formal writing?
2. Is the part in bold OK? Aspirin, I believe, does make blood thinner. However, it is mainly used for mild fever and headache. How do I improve the sentence?

Thanks.
