Pompeii, once known as the vacation spot for the noble, was buried under ashes for 2,000 years, taking more than 2,000 lives.


I would like to know the meaning of "taking".
1. ashes that took more than 2,000 lives.
2. and (Pompeii) took more than 2,000 lives.
