Vocabulary

take/perceive

Hello,
I just came across this random sentence: "Give me a mug of hot chocolate and I will perceive it as a sign of amiability." Can't we just use "take" instead of perceive? I think the meaning won't change.

There's plenty of other verbs that would fit the context. To you, does "take" sound less natural than "perceive"? I am not a native speaker, but I think it is more natural in everyday English.

No.
Take is an extremely common verb. Perceive is not.
Many native speakers have limited vocabularies, and surely will know and use "take" rather than "perceive.."
