Generally, human beings are taken to be descended from monkeys.

Is this sentence correct?

i think you shoud use the word "took "instead taken if you want to use taken the sentence should write in this way

Let's not address facts. (As I understand it, humans and modern-day monkeys are believed to be descended from a common ancestor, but that's besides the point.)

"are taken to be" means "believed as a fact to be."

When I saw him, I took him to be her father. I was so embarrassed to find out he was her boyfriend!
