Take/mistake

I would like to know the difference between "1" and "2".

1. I took him for his brother.

2. I mistook him for his brother.

In the first of these sentences, it is still not definitely known whether 'he' was 'his brother' or not, although we tend to understand that 'he' was not. In the second sentence we clearly see that the speaker made a wrong assumption about 'his brother'.
