Takeaway

Hello,

Is the usage of takeaway in the following manner mainly informal or colloquial?

"The other big takeaway from the book was that life insurance is another industry that only commanded high prices by hiding information."

Or do you think it is quite acceptable to use it in formal writing as well?

Thank you.

Mainly informal. My opinion is that it has not stewed in the collective ether of discourse long enough to be accepted in formal contexts. I associate it with something you get at fast food and Chinese restaurants.

SuperESLtakeaway ... mainly informal
Yes. It strikes me as something that may have originated as "business English" and leaked out into general English (as an informal expression).

Like many of the new "business speak" inventions, it has become hackneyed far beyond the point of reasonableness.
