Take your host

A salesclerk said the following to a customer:

I see you're looking at the chocolates. That's a perfect gift to take your host for a dinner here, but not a good idea to take home as a souvenir.

May I ask what "take your host for a dinner here" mean? Thanks.

May I ask one more question?

I am little confused about the phrase "take your host". I thought "take to your host" would sound better. Do you agree?
