TAKE vs. BRING

Dear teachers: If I am speaking with a friend by phone, I haveto say, "Don't worry about the dessert for tonight's party. I am BRINGING three big cakes." Why can't I say, "I'm TAKING three cakes (from my home to your home)"? Thank you, dear teachers.
