Take up the cause

Hi,

What does 'take up the cause of someone' mean?

"Lucy must now moonlight as a car hop at a drive-in theater in order to afford to pay for a replacement. While there, she takes up the cause of a young motorcyclist who's accused of stealing and stripping cars."

Thank you very much.
