Take something as a yes on something

Steve and Ben are quarrelling. Ben says that he might not smoke marijuana in the future, but this is not directly stated.
Steve: That's kind of ominous. And because of its non sequitur nature, I'm going to take that
as a yes on the weed.
Can it be paraphrased like that? “ you’re kidding (?) and you will smoke next time so I can bring it”?

The English is correct, but I'm not clear from your description whether "that's a yes" is means that he will smoke it or won't smoke it. The explanation seems somewhat contradictory. A "non sequitur" is a statement that does not logically follow what preceded it.

  • There is nothing in your description to say that Ben's statement is a non sequitur.
