Take somebody to the cleaners

Does such expression exist ?

( I found this expression in the following context )
Shortly after the original series was cancelled, his wife left him and took him to the cleaners. With very little money and acting prospects now, he lived in a truck bed camper until acting bit-parts turned into higher paying roles.

I understand that the person they are talking about ,was left without anything. My question again is , Does such expression exist ?

Thanks
