Take second fiddle

Hi

In a book about magic the author writes: For example, if it feels right you can call yourself whatever you like (a Taoist or a Catholic or whatever), but just don't take second fiddle to the leader of your church (or me, or anyone else) when it comes to what's "true/not true" and "okay/not okay".

Does "if it feels right" mean "if you feel it's OK"?

Does "take second fiddle" mean the same as "play second fiddle"? So does it mean "don't subordinate to the leader of your church"?

Thanks

"Take second fiddle" is a mistake for "play second fiddle" by confusion with "take a back seat", which is what the writer was going for: "but just don't take a back seat to the leader of your church ...". You can't play second fiddle "to" anybody anyway, you just play it.
