Vocabulary

Take refuge in pure reason and revelation that need apologize.

Implicit in all the attacks on the reflex school is a resentment that the human being is composed of matter, and that,is the phrase goes, Darwin was right. Surely, the current state of the world casts serious doubts upon the importance of the higher mental processes in the determination of behavior. The application of science to the study of human personality needs no defense, not if we are interested in knowledge and its adaptation. It is only they who take refuge in pure reason and revelation that need apologize.

(from Conditioned Reflex Therapy by Andrew Salter)

Hello,

Could anyone explain the words in blue and red, especially the words in red?

1. Does the author said it is the right of his and his fellows to apply his theory abot the study of human personality?

2. It's the people who attack him out of personal reason who should apologize. The pure reason is out of facts of science?

These are just my blind shot, and I don't understand what he is talking aobut.

Thanks!

The author says that some people argue that the scientific study of human behavior is unjustified. They believe that human behavior is governed by supernatural elements, not simply chemical reactions in a physical material, and cannot be studied by scientific methods.
