Take position

What is the common use of this phrase. You "take a position" then you have a certain point of view. Can a tool of a machine take a position, too?

Thank you!

Are you talking about the moving parts of a machine? " The "position" of a machine part is a literal place in space; the "position" of a person is, as you know, a point of view or opinion.

Are you talking about the moving parts of a machine? I would say "moves into position" or "reaches a position," not "takes." The "position" of a machine part is a literal place in space; the "position" of a person is, as you know, a point of view or opinion.
