take place

When you say

The episode takes place
do you talk about the place or time?

Are all these correct? Can you say it takes place somewhere and takes place over a period of time? If so, would you use 'period' or 'course'?

This episode take place in her home town of New Jersey.

This episode takes place over a period of 48 hours.
Other episodes sometimes take place over the course/period of 2 months. It all depends on the episode.

Thanks
