'take over' for 'absorb'?

Hi all, can I say "sth takes over my day" if I want to express that it absorbs the most of my time during the day? For example: "The weekly calls take over my Tuesdays" . Or how would I say that in everyday spoken English to not sound overly formal?

I think I would say "The weekly calls completely take up my Tuesdays." Emotion: wink
