take myself down a peg

I found this phrase in the speech of Obama. He said 'they suggested that I should start with some jokes at my expense, just take myself down a peg'. Could you tell me what it means?

To take down a peg means to take something from a higher state to a lower state - usually from a state that's too high to an acceptable one. In this case the suggestion would be to make the president seem ordinary, human and approachable, not high up. d
