Traditionally, the father of the woman getting married walks with her down the aisle of the church to where her fiance is waiting for her and "gives" her to her soon-to-be husband. Modern weddings often skip any wording about the bride being "given away" but many women still want to walk down the aisle with their fathers. We usually say "walk her down the aisle" not "take her down the aisle," though.
