Take down a peg

Hello, I've got a question about an idiom "Take down a peg".

If I say: " Nobody takes anybody down a peg here". Is it correct?

Thank you.

Hi, It's OK, although the idiom is usually used in the context of a situation where somebody actually performs the verbal act of 'taking down a peg'. I don't seem to hear this idiom a lot these days. A more current version, I think, is 'Take down a notch'.

If someone says: You did that and that and how dare you.... and the "offender" answers " Nobody takes anybody down a notch here." Can we say that?

or It's when you won and thus can say "took them down a notch"? You can also say it here, although although the underlying idea is the same, ie admonish them.

Hi Olga,

It could well be that "take someone down a peg" is more commonly heard in Britain than it is in North America (personally, I rarely hear the expression 'take down a notch' used in the UK, at least in the sense of admonishing a person).

Yizhivika,
Thank you. If I happen to be in London, I’ll use “Take down a peg” . I hope I won’t use at all, but it’s good to know.
