or would you say

cares for the baby better...

Now you're not sure if the author means that the care she gives the baby is better care of the baby than the care we give to oursevles.

She takes care of the baby > we take care for ourselves.

I would expect the word "of" (than we do of ourselves) if you meant that, but there is no reason to include the word "ourselves" in there, so it leads to confusion.
