Hi

When a son behaves similarly to his father, both in a positive and a negative way, can I say then that he "takes it after his father"?

thanks

You should remove 'it', so it should be "He takes after his father."

He takes it after his father.

Another expression with a positive meaning is "he's a chip off the old block."
