Take a soft line

Hi,

“My law teacher takes a soft line with his classes.”

He doesn’t demand too much from us and he only wants us to skirt around the basics of law.

I heard a native speaker use ‘take a soft line’ in a similar situation, but I’m not entirely sure if it’s okay.

Thank you.

I don't hear or see that phrase much, but it seems OK to me. It's the opposite of 'take a hard line', which is used a lot more often.
