Take a shot at

"to take a shot at something"

What is the actual meaning of this phrase ? I know the metaphorical meaning, which is "to attempt something".
Is the actual meaning one of the following three :
1. To get a target in sight.
2. To shoot at a target with or without success.
3. To shoot at a target with success.

Maybe it can be the actual meaning but most likely people say it as "to attempt,try something" It can work but its better to be safe than sorry.Use the metaphorical meaning.
