Take a run at

Hi,

Can I use ‘take a run at’ in the following situation?

“I really had to apply myself to the assignment to see it through to the end.”

Would it be possible for me to replace it with ‘take a run at’?

“I really had to take a run at the assignment.”

I’m not sure how common it is, but I came across it in a book written by a native speaker.

Thank you.
