It is impossible to be completely honest with your friend.
When considering the issue that being entirely honest with our friend is impossible, certain factors are required to be taken into account.
People may look for the situation, what happened?, the relationship between our friend and us, the consequence, and the approaches and whatnots.
For me, when I encounter the dilemma, whether it be truthful or untruthful, I will regard the relationship and the consequence as the most critical determinant to
choose the way I solve the problem.
What would I do if I face the decision that be honest to our friend or not? We have different depth of relationship with each of our friends. I, for example, decided to
study abroad when I was in high school. I told my friend, Mike, my plan seven weeks right before my departure. He was annoyed. He thinks I was not honest with him
and I should have tell him when my idea came up in my mind. Actually I did think of telling him about my decision. However, I knew he would be mad at me because he always consider us the partner, which means we have to going to the university together, if I tell him too early. Therefore, I decided to tell him when everything was
settled down. Despite the fact that honesty is essential for friends, I did not think our relation is not that good.
How do we pick the right solution toward the situation that we might have to lie to our friend? It depends on the consequence of our choice of the solution. For
instance, once I promised my best friend, Jeff, to join his birthday party. I found that I also guarantee my girlfriend to participate in her friends party. It was so tough that
I did not even know which one should I choose. My best friend, or my girlfriend? I went to the party of my girlfriend's friend. And I knew Jeff will be upset if I did so.
Therefore, I told him my parents would not allow me to the party. I lied to him but he did not blame me anyway. However, were I to tell him the truth, he would be completely mad. Therefore, it is hard to be totally truthful with our friend when we are on the decision point.
To sum up, although some people might think be honest with our friends is always the right way, we, as a adult, are supposed to choose the win-win solution, avoiding
hurting anyone involved. Were I to suggest a way dealing with the tough situation between our friend and us, I would strongly recommend analyze the problem first
and then decide the better method to cope with the problem. It is imperative that be honest with our friends. Therefore, if we choose a proper way, not only do we maintain our friendship, but also make a happy ending.
