True, we need context, because the phrase can just as easily mean receiving a few blows, as in a target being shot at. 'I took a few hits when I presented my proposal to the committee.' (In other words the committee members 'hit' me with some tough questions/criticisms.)

It's not a common way of expressing such a meaning. A common way would be 'take a few swings at ..... something'.

The image is 'swinging a bat at a ball'. A swing is a try. A hit is a success.
