Take

Hi.
Is 'take' use correctly in:

The Shia sect (the twelver branch),which to this date has widely mixed with the Iranians national identity, has taken an important place since the Safavids’ time.
?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't call 'has taken' wrong, but ' has held ' is much more natural and idiomatic.. with the Iranians' national identity with the Iranian national identity I don't undersatnd what it means when 'a sect mixes with a national identity'. Can you say it another way?

I said it's mixed with the Iranian identity.
No matter what religion an Iranian is, he should know about the customs of shia religion.
The formal religion is Shia, and when one talks of Shia faith one immediately recalls Iran. Iran is the only shia country with the formal religion of Shia Islam

That wasn't clear to me from your words.

I suggest this.

The Shia faith (the Twelver branch) has been a fundamental part of the Iranian national identity since the time of the Safavids.
