Tag question for 'one'

First, what tags would you use, Anon? Post them here and we'll check them.

I use these-

1) shouldn’t one

2) isn’t he

3) wasn’t one

1) shouldn’t one -- This is fine and correct. A native speaker might also also say, 'shouldn't they?'

2) isn’t he -- OK

3) (X) wasn’t one -- This is no good. The problem has no perfect solution. These are the common native tags: 'Wasn't he?', 'Weren't they?' Of course, if it is a girls's school, 'Wasn't she?'

Can I just add that "one" is hardly ever used in UK English if it means "you" - except in formal circumstances. For (1) I would have..

- You should keep your promises, shouldn't you?

And, of course, you can form a tag question without worrying about the grammar..

- One of the students was absent, correct?

- One of the students was absent, yes?
