Tag question

Hello,

1.I don't like him, do you?

I want to know why the tag question has "do you" when "I" is the subject of the sentence.
e.g.
2. I'm happy, aren't you?

One more question-

What does the tag question part mean?

Thanks.

No one is so dumb as to ask himself : I don't like him, do I? That's why something else is usually used. You can of course say: I am right, aren't I ?

  • Or you're just being polite.

Or you're just being polite. Tag questions often just soften your comments and make them sound less abrupt.

I'm happy, aren't you?
Those aren’t tag questions; they’re comma splices. They should be written as:

I don’t like him. Do you?
I’m happy. Aren’t you?
