Tag question

Even though I think myself is pretty familiar with how to use and answer tag questions, I still want to point out some mistakes my English teachers may have made in the classroom. He said:

You're not going to the party, are you?
Yes. (= I am not going to the party.)
No. (=I am going to the party.)

Does it sound like a joke? I can't believe this is what I learn from my English class. He even mentioned that this is very confusing even for native speakers. I think he must be the one who got confused.

Yes. (= I am not going to the party.)

Your teacher is mistaken. Saying yes or no would answer the question are you (going to the party)? so yes would mean I am going to the party, and no would mean I am not going to the party

If someone just answered 'yes', I'd ask them to clarify their meaning.

I might, too, but for some reason, no would be a perfectly clear and natural answer.
