Table tennis serve

Hi,

You know how when you're playing with your friends, you play the first ball to decide who's going to serve first.
There's an episode of The Office (US) where Pam and Kelly do that. Pam serves the ball and says "P". Kelly hits it and says "O", but the ball is out, and they restart the process.

Can you please explain to me how that works? Because in the show the scene then changes and we don't get to see the whole process.

Thank you
H.

I have not seen this episode, but as far as I know, this is not a standard method of deciding who serves first. The official Table Tennis Rules have nothing to say on the matter. Presumably players toss a coin to decide.
