System research or systems research?

Most of the time, I find when connecting two nouns to form a new noun phrase, the first noun is in a singular form -- such as, pattern analysis, programming language concepts, or something like that. But every now and then I will find some exceptions, such as systems analysis -- which has the plural form of systems.

Are there any rules or principles to this? I'm setting up a research group and I don't know if I should put it as: game research or games research, or, similarly, entertainment system research or entertainment systems research.

Can anyone enlighten me on this? Thank you very much!
