Jenny fell ill. She ate some unclean food.

Jenny fell ill after she ate/had eaten some unclean food.

Which verb/s should I use?

I would use 'ate' but a friend of mine says it should 'had eaten'.

Many thanks.

The past perfect is not called for; 'after' clearly indicates the sequence of events, so the simple past is sufficient. e. to stress this sequence of events).

Dear Liat/Marius,

v1- feel
v2 - felt
v3 - felt

In respect to the sequence of posts in this thread, perhaps I was wrong all these years? Should it be as the following:
v1 - feel
v2 - fell
v3 felt?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you, Liat.
I inadvertently thought that you meant 'felt', and not 'fell'.
