Syntax-semantic role-

Hello, members,

I am studying English and taking "syntax" class now. Plese somebody help these questions out.

Which predicate assigns what semantic role to the bold DP, definitive phase, in the following sentences?

1. There arrived two wise women from the forest.

2. Mike was suspicious of Becky.

3. The doctor was on the village.

Plese teach these answers and let me know how to solve these type of questions.

Thank you very much.

Hi Anon, I had a similar lesson in the university but I still couldn't understand what you mean. Anyway, as I was taught predicates in a sentence follows this rule: Predicate= predicator + predicator complement. I guess your teacher want you to find the function and category names of the components in the sentences.

Hi

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to fing the thematic roles in the sentences. If this is it, note the following:

1. There arrived two wise women from the forest -----> The syntax here is pretty complicated (don't think we have discussed that in class). Anyway, the thematic role of "two wise" is given by the noun "women", since the NP is "two wise women"
