Syntax and Semantics

Am I right to say that in the following sentence, there should have been the preposition "for" after "except?

1. It happens to us all, except Daniel.

And, I also feel that the following sentence is semantically wrong. My correction follows the original sentence:

2. It seems he has regressed during his evolution to an Amoeba.

It seems that he has regressed to a level of an amoeba during his evolution. (Maybe, the "that" is optional here).

May I know whether I am right about the two sentences ?

Thank you very much.

Even so, if he regressed, then he rather 'devolved', not evolved.

No. "except" is OK as a preposition.

It happens to us all, except Daniel.
The sentence is strange. It implies that Daniel is supernatural, or of a different species than the one that "us" refers to.

This would make more sense:

Anonymous to a level of an amoeba
In modern thought, there are no "levels" in evolution.
That is an old idea going back to the great chain of being from the Greek philosophers, and fully developed in religious doctrine.
