syntactic relations and underlying forms conundrum
0 I have been agonizing over the following assignment:02br 02br 00"Draw tree diagrams of the underlying structure of and explain the difference in the relationship between Harry and the verb See in:02br 001.Josh advised Harry to see the doctor.02br 002.Josh promised Harry to see the doctor."02br 02br 00I realize that Harry is the one whose visiting a doctor is the topic of sentence 1, whereas in 2 it's Josh. Still, I can't seem to break the sentences into their underlying forms in any fruitful way. 2: "Josh promised Harry." and "Josh promised to see the doctor" could conceivably be the underlying forms, but how does that help? For sentence 1, I am unable to think of any two underlying clauses at all. Or what is it they mean by this 'underlying structure' that one is supposed to expound? I am stumped.0-
